The Arctic Monkeys surely showed potential on Whatever People Say I Am, but their youthful vigor often camouflaged their debt to other bands. Some may call it striking when the iron is hot, cashing in while there's still interest, but Favourite Worst Nightmare is the opposite of opportunism: it's the vibrant, thrilling sound of a band coming into its own. All year long they toured, rapidly writing and recording their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, getting it out just a little over a year after their debut, a speedy turnaround by any measure.

Heady stuff for a group just out of their teens, and they weathered the storm with minimal damage, losing their bassist but not their sense of purpose as they coped in the time-honored method for young bands riding the wave of enormous success: they kept on working. Lead singer/songwriter Alex Turner had to be the best songwriter since Noel Gallagher or perhaps even Paul Weller, and their debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, at first was hailed as one of the most important albums of the decade, and then, just months after its release, NME called it one of the Top Five British albums ever. It wasn't enough for the Arctic Monkeys to be the best new band of 2006 they had to be the saviors of rock & roll. TLDR: their live performances keep getting better and better, so their most recent performances are their best.Breathless praise is a time-honored tradition in British pop music, but even so, the whole brouhaha surrounding the 2006 debut of the Arctic Monkeys bordered on the absurd. shit, i don't even like Arabella, but the new crazy ass bridge is so damn cool. the older live versions of One For the Road, without the extended bit, just don't sound as special. I can't listen to My Propeller live versions anymore without that awesome transition from Knee Socks. throw in all of the extended intros/outros (Dancefloor, Library Pictures, High, Wanna Be Yours, One For the Road, R U Mine, etc.) and you've got a hell of a show. the Teddy Picker->Crying Lightning + Knee Socks->My Propeller segment of their set is fucking fantastic. Over the years, the live arrangements of their songs keep getting better and better (although i think we all desperately miss the extended versions of Secret Door and Fluorescent Adolescent from the Humbug tour).

Also Nick's bass game is strong here and watching him play this tune is quite awesome as well.Д®xcuse me for how excited I got typing this, as you can probably tell, I got really excited about this show, and from later performances in the evening like Mardy Bum and even that finale with A Certain Romance make me just fall in love with how energetic the Monkeys were in that WPSIATWIN/FWN era. As he sings the first verse, just hearing the crowd belt it out along with him amazes me, then he goes quiet and the crowd sings the next verses which is just such an amazing crowd atmosphere and then Turner hops into the main chorus which blows me away.ДЄnyways that performance is one of my favorites and I just enjoy how they hop straight into Brianstorm right after, with The Agile Beast just poundin it on the drums with so much effort as the crowd goes wild, making this one of my favorite performaces of not just AM, but that I have seen so far. And then when Alex walks out from the smoke to grab his guitar and play a few test chords as everyone else sets up receiving a loud cheer simply saying 'Hello everybody' before jumping straight into When The Sun Goes Down gives me chills. Everything leading up to the boys appearing on stage is wonderful, the crowd is all excited, flags waving as Matador plays. I am absolutely in love with this performance of When The Sun Goes Down and Brianstorm from Glastonbury 2007 (I assume you are talking about Glastonbury 2013 but including this just in case).
